Ecotherapy – An Invitation and Introduction to using Nature in the Therapeutic Process

For therapists, counsellors, drug and alcohol workers, youth workers, child protection workers, childcare workers, aged care workers, occupational therapists, diversional therapists, recreation officers social/community workers, teachers etc.

The 3 days is facilitated by Kerryn Coombs-Valeontis (B.Ed. M. App. Sci. Social Ecology, Dip. Transpersonal Art Therapy, Certificate Organic Agriculture)) Kerryn is an Art Therapist and Horticultural Therapist, working in mental health, in Sydney, Australia. She is also a teacher, poet and artist, who grew up in Aotearoa, NZ. She was commissioned to develop this course, for the Horticultural Society of NSW in 2012. She has taught it to over 50 participants. It has developed from her years of working in the community and mental health sectors, and as an Art and Horticultural Therapist.

The Course will cover:

  • an introduction to Ecotherapy as both ancient and emerging discipline; overview of traditional and current theoretical frameworks; indigenous and cultural perspectives
  • overview of group facilitation skills specific to working with nature contexts
  • WH&S considerations for working outdoors
  • ideas for program development/incorporation in existing work
  • participation in activities that are inspiring and grounded deeply in working with nature as healer including;
  1. working with 54 senses: the non-verbal language of nature
  2. working with the seasons as metaphor for thriving
  3. deepening the healing potential of flowers
  4. listening through nature writing for everyone
  5. land art
  6. ideas for bringing nature inside
  7. ideas for working with nature, with individuals
