ENLIVENED BEING: Opening the Heart with Compassion and Wisdom with Ven. Vīrañāṇī

Compassion Retreat: 16-18 October 2015/Insight (Vipassanā) Meditation Retreat: 18-25 October, 2015

Compassion and Wisdom are the deeply interconnected core of the Buddha’s teachings. As the eye of wisdom opens, the nature of all things reveals itself ever more deeply—and the more we see these truths, the more we are able to respond with kindness and care to the suffering within and around us. Conversely, as we begin to experience compassion, it becomes easier to open to the sometimes challenging truths of life. This natural interweaving of wisdom and compassion brings a strength of heart and a blossoming of happiness, even in the midst of the rush and turmoil of our daily lives. With balanced wings of both wisdom and compassion, the heart can truly soar.

In this series of retreats, Ven Virañani will offer the traditional Burmese teachings of wisdom and compassion in a gradual and accessible way. After a weekend of softening the heart with compassion practice, there will be an opportunity to develop insight and compassion together during a week of Vipassanā practice. You are invited to explore the teachings as deeply as you like: you may register for the weekend, the week, or for the entire 10 days. Group sessions and solitary time to sit and walk in nature will allow each person to find their own rhythm in the practice, with the autumn beauty of the Te Moata bush providing the perfect container and natural support.

Ven. Vīrañāṇi began to practice meditation in 1979. In 2003, after several years spent working at the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, USA and almost a decade of practice in in the Thai Forest tradition, she began a four-year period devoted largely to intensive practice in the Burmese lineage of Mahasi Sayadaw. She ordained in Burma with Sayadaw U Pandita on New Year 2006, and now resides at the Chanmyay Myaing Meditation Centre North of Yangon, where she helps support the foreign yogis. She also teaches loving kindness and vipassanā meditation in the USA and Australia. In 2008 she co-founded Metta In Action, a charity devoted to offering Burmese people in need the means and skills to help themselves. She is passionate about the Dhamma, about nature, and about using both to help others rediscover the intrinsic goodness in all beings.
