Permaculture

Te Moata works together with groups bringing permaculture courses and certificates to Te Moata.

Permaculture reflects our vision for kaitiakitanga (stewardship) of the lands at Te Moata.
We follow three main ethical principles of permaculture:

  • Caring for the Earth / Papatuanuku by ensuring that the 344 hectares of bush can regrow undisturbed and that the streams running through the land are kept clean and pure, habitats for native fauna and flora are protected. Fruit and vegetables are grown naturally and lovingly on the land in healthy soil.
  • Caring for the People by providing a sanctuary where people can experience nature, quietness, community and learn ways to live harmoniously. As they grow themselves they can then reach out to others. A place where travellers from other areas can come and learn more about permaculture and about Aotearoa.
  • Sharing Resources – our Managers live as a small community, sharing tasks and resources. Woofers and other visitors blend into this structure. The resources from the land are shared with course participants. Those on meditation retreats offer karma yoga as a way of giving back to Te Moata. The sangha forms a local community, offering their skills at different times to Te Moata. All our governance structures are co-operacy based. We limit consumption and recycle almost everything.
