Wish List

Te Moata, like many large Retreat Centres, exists because of the Love, caring and generosity of so many people.  People who have donated time, materials, money, expertise, physical resources and spiritual resources.  Our deep and heartfelt gratitude goes out to you all.

In the book “A Systems View of Life”, Fritjof Capra and Pier Luigi Luis believe that there will be a shift from individual ownership of land, as personal property, back into some form of collective human custodianship and interdependence with the land, with Gaia.  Te Moata is one example of this Deep Ecology point of view starting to develop.

The people who care for Te Moata; the resident custodians, the shareholders, the trust and all the people the trust represents, those who support Te Moata by attending Retreats, those contributing monthly amounts to pay off loans, the Friends of Te Moata, the woofers and occasional visitors to Te Moata, are all part of the human element of custodianship and interdependence with this land.  As custodians we all have the opportunity to give what we are able to give, to our place on Gaia.  This is our gift to the future of nature, the future of humans and the future of Earth.

A large Retreat Centre like Te Moata always has items waiting for replacement as they age, as well as new projects waiting to be funded.  Things that await the financial resources to allow for their purchase and the skills and time to incorporate them into present day Te Moata.

Below is a list of some needed gifts to support Te Moata, our place on Gaia.   If something on this list attracts you please click on it and you will go to a fuller explanation.  If you would like to offer help towards anything on our list please email, text or call Douglas on 027 226 7686.

 Refurbish the Cottage

Through the kind support of one of our generous patrons we are now able to start work on refurbishing the cottage. The envisioned work will comprise:

  • a new solar Pv system
  • renewing the flooring where necessary.
  • rearranging the internal layout by adding partitions to allow extra accommodation.
  • replacing the old gas fridge with a new electric fridge.
  • An outlet for the vacuum cleaner to plug in to.

We still need skilled volunteers to accomplish the work and financial support will, as always, also be appreciated.

Refurbishment of the oldest building on the property, the Barn

This project has launched!

The estimated value of $30,000 to start this project has been donated and plans have been drawn up so now all we need is people and this project can go ahead.  The project includes installation of two composting toilets. Rebuilding the front deck. Re-cladding and re glazing the whole building, upgrading the kitchen, replacing the water tank and upgrading the shower.

Now we have the money to commence and know we can continue until the Barn is fully weather proof and safe again.  There will be ongoing immediate purchases outside our initial budget that you are invited to contribute to.

If you would like to donate directly to the Te Moata Charitable Trust Bank Account, the number is 12-3044-0422743-00.  Please put your initials and the word “Barn” in the particulars boxes.  Donations are Tax deductible so if needed do please text 027 226 7686 or email for a receipt.

The Barn is the original centre where retreats were first held. It is situated about 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from the present Centre in regenerating native bush with beautiful nature and sea views. It is envisioned as a place to bring schools so that children can have an experience of nature that will help them to understand how precious nature is and our interrelationships with all things.
The project can be made into a number of smaller projects. It would be possible for instance to re-clad and glaze one wall at a time.

As well as needing specific people namely:

·         A retired builder might like a grand retirement project.

·         A helicopter pilot running up hours for certification for lifting work to fly supplies in and debris out.

The Barn can still use donations towards this project which could include:

  • Financial support
  • Composting Toilets as a first step
  • Aluminium Joiner
  • Construction ply
  • large plastic water tank
  • the list is long

If you have any questions about the Barn project or anything to offer please text Dave on 021 241 7458 or email.  This project has launched!

Sink Bench

A replacement sink bench and cupboard unit would enhance and improve efficiency at the outside food preparation area outside the kitchen.

A fireplace for the Earth Hut and Air Hut:

The present cost of a small fireplace for the Earth hut and Air Hut is about $3,500.
The services of a professional fireplace installer would greatly assist with this project.  Maybe you sell fireplaces and would be willing to donate a small efficient wood burner.

People of all skills, all ages, anyone!  Everyone 🙂

Working Bees are running from time to time and at least once a year.  These are a great opportunity for people to be a part of the running of Te Moata and also to have some time on the land to enjoy her.  Anyone who might be interested in coming to working Bees is invited to email Douglas to go on a working bee newsletter list so that you can be kept in the loop about planned working bees and have more in depth information than can go out on the Te Moata newsletter.  Being on the working bee list carries no obligation to come.

To be added to the Working Bee list please register with Douglas by email

People with special skills.

You might be an accountant, a concrete floor contractor, a website administrator, a plumber, a writer or builder or any other profession or trade and be attracted to doing a bit for Te Moata when it’s needed but not necessarily when a working Bee is running.  If this fits you, please contact Douglas and be registered as a professional or trades person who wishes to support Te Moata.  Please email Douglas.

A storage facility

News.   Thanks to all the wonderful and generous people who were involved in the last fundraiser, and with some donated money, we are now able to go ahead with stage one, two and three of the storage facility which will start when the land dries out a bit.

Why a storage facility?  Times are changing.  More ongoing work is required to keep Te Moata up to date and up to standard.  This generates left over resources that, if we wish to be sustainable, need to be stored for future work.  More people are attending retreats from overseas necessitating storage space for more bedding among other things.  We have been and are hugely grateful to our wonderful neighbour, Editha, for allowing us, in the past, to store firewood in block form at her shed, and to split and store the split wood there until it was dry.  This was an immense help to us.  We now need to move that operation onto Te Moata land.

All these changes to our operations and visitor requirements has brought us to the place of needing a storage facility.  The cost of the whole project today would be about $22,300 with volunteers to erect a kit-set double garage.

Stage 1: Lay a culvert and driveway into a leveled area covered with gravel  $2.000

Stage 2: Make the yard private (as is done at Auckland Zoo and the Domain) to promote a high level of aesthetics.  $700

Stage 3: Erect a double garage for dry storage.  $19,000

Stage 4: Maximise the outside storage space by erecting bins to contain blocks, split wood, mulch and other loose bulk materials.  $600

New guttering on the centre.

New guttering has been fitted around the courtyard.  Now we need funding for the rest of the guttering that goes around the outer periphery of the centre.  Our present quote to complete the new guttering project is $11,000.

An investigative journalist or experienced author/writer.

Te Moata has been growing for more than twenty years now and her story is rich with funny and sad stories, fascinating synchronicities, and interesting facts.  Someone needs to gather the history of Te Moata from the last 25 years and assemble that history into a manuscript for a book. If it doesn’t happen soon we risk losing some of this rich story to time.  We need someone to interview the people who have been, and are, linked to this special place while they are still with us to tell their story.  You would need to be willing to keep your files in a communal file, like google docs, so that if you became unable to complete your mission someone else would be able to pick it up and carry on.

Very experienced tree fellers.

Or an experienced logger supervising a small crew.  We are keen to re-establish the natural forest cover on the 344 Ha that we care for.  Now is the time to fell wild pine trees that are sprinkled all over Te Moata.  Now because there will be some residual damage to second growth native but it will quickly regenerate at this young age.  We need experienced people who can fell most of the trees, using wedging techniques, (and possibly hand winching) inside the area already taken by the small stands of pines. That is to say, fell the stand of pines within its own footprint.  This will not always be possible but is the quality to aim for.  Some underside limbing to keep the stems stable as they rot will be needed and some cutting of stems, where they bridge, to keep them low and promote a rapid rot. Estimated to be two weeks work for a crew of three experienced tree fellers. This is a job for a logger or arborist. A job that can be spread out over a couple of years.  For more information please email Douglas or phone or text to 027 226 7686.
