History & Lineage

Te Moata Retreat Centre has a rich history that dates back to the late 1980s when it was originally established as a Buddhist meditation centre.

Te Moata Timeline

This timeline has primarily been gathered from the insightful research conducted by Vonnie Boston, as well as Te Moata minutes and newsletters. This timeline is dedicated to Te Moata and is open for additions, updates, and changes as necessary.

Vision, Determination, Passion

The late Tim Wyn-Harris (2016) acquired 344 hectares of scrubland with a vision to create a retreat centre. His energy and passion inspired many to join him, planting trees, constructing buildings, and managing projects. Named "Te Moata" in honour of his mother, the centre symbolises hope and renewal. This year marked the start of a journey focused on personal growth and community connection.

Centre Design & Build

Centre designed by architect Hugh Tennant with draft drawings from John and Keryn Drummond. Construction was executed by J Turner and his team, using cedar timber for the ceilings to create a warm atmosphere. The retreat features two 'walking meditation rooms,' including the 'bookless library,' which encourages visitors to "read one’s own mind" for deeper self-connection. It operated without electricity, relying on candles and torches for light. The modest kitchen has a small fridge and three gas rings where Enid and her helpers prepare nourishing meals. A carport offers convenient access for visitors and supplies. This design fosters mindfulness, simplicity, and connection with nature.

A Change Of Guard – The Guardians and The Creation of Sacred Circles

The Guardians’, self-named ‘The Mottly Crew’, purchased Te Moata to ensure the survival of the Centre. This heralded a decade in which the Sacred Circles were created, honouring the land and the Divine Feminine. The Mottly Crew initially consisted of Marnie Norris, Maia McGrath, Premanand Provan and Willow Want, with Suni Sharpe joining Marnie and Maia in the running of the Centre for many years.

Lands Trust Established

Te Moata Lands Trust established, marking a significant milestone in the stewardship of the Te Moata Retreat. The founding trustees included Marnie L. Norris (Tara-Marnie), Pauline A. McGrath (Maia), Mary S. Want (Willow), William G. Provan (Premanand), Stephen Parr, Suzanne Patricia Sharpe (Suni), and Craig Peter Norris.

Charitable Trust Established

A significant deed of variation was established, replacing the original Trust deed from 2000. This update highlights the continuity and commitment of Marnie and Maia (P McGrath) as trustees, maintaining their roles from the previous trust. Joining them in stewardship are Suni (S Sharpe), Richard Solomon, and Stephen Archer, who have been appointed as trustees since August 2006. This evolution reflects a thoughtful approach to governance, ensuring that the trust is guided by a dedicated team focused on its mission and values.

Save Te Moata Campaign

Te Moata was purchased by the Te Moata Guardianship Company, with the primary shareholder being the Te Moata Charitable Trust. This initiative brought together a diverse group of shareholders, including past owners, dedicated members of the Te Moata community, and passionate newcomers who were inspired to support this meaningful cause.

Wwoofers and Commitment to Community Engagement

The introduction of Wwoofers marked a transformative phase in our community-focused initiatives. This initiative not only strengthened our connection with volunteers but also reinforced the ongoing dedication of our community members, shareholders, and trustees, who continue to provide invaluable support over the next 10 years.

As we embraced this new chapter, we began scheduling annual retreats that quickly gained popularity, with bookings extending two years in advance. This forward-thinking approach not only enhances our retreat offerings but also ensures a vibrant and engaging experience for all participants.
